I’m actually weighing the options on buying an R129 after I buy my SC400. I have no one to blame but myself...
...and maybe Tyler Hoover.
Frankly, the R129 has always been my favorite generation of SL. I’m doing a lot of research into electrical reliability and everything to see if there’s anything that will talk me out of it but it’s all been a bunch of, “I can manage to fix that,” or, “That doesn’t seem too difficult,” instead of, “I shouldn’t do this, this is crazy, why am I doing this?”
Lord help me if I ever actually have money to spend.

I agree with the R129 being the best SL series and the SL 73 AMG is a car I would love to drive. Maybe own...

I can hate you too if you’d like. I mean, once you have a decent R129 it will be a lot easier for me. Not just out of jealousy or spite, but because once you have one you’ll be double parking and swerving on your mobile phone while talking at length with the MB parts guy about ‘this noise’ a lot more.

R129 AMG with monoblock wheels.
HnnnNNNNNNNN

If he buys the multitude of replacement parts from an actual MB Parts counter, then he really does hate himself (and his money).

I strangely have a need for that car now.

I want one too.

The R129 panoramic roof is cool as fuck!
But the SC400 is a much better car. The SC430 that everybody hates is basically the SL done right. A premium 2
-seater with a back seat just
for show like the SL, but a much better car that will give you no problems.

And a change of pants

That may well be, but it looks like a Kia Rondo with the roof cut off.

These cars, while not expensive or terribly difficult to work on are a car thats best to buy the nicest one possible.
Every problem will be a matter of 100 to 100s. Electrics are only problematic between 92 and 95. The m119 is more powerful but the m113 is modern reliable. The V12 is asking for trouble. All the money in parts are in the front end and the hydraulics across all models .
You can get the I6 in manual but thats almost not in the spirit of this 4000 pound car.
They cant cut keys for the later cars right now ive heard.
Mine is a true ragamuffin, but i have everything to make it nice time and money provided

But the R129 is Good

I don’t get the SC430 hate. It has aged really well I think. Especially the later cars, with some nice wheels can look really sporty. And the earlier ones have a really funky look to them that just works, kind of like the first gen TT.
Also, as you said it’s like having an R129, just without many of the headaches about things breaking and drivetrain reliability. The backseat is laughable, and the R129 for the US probably did it right without even bothering to offer one…but hey, just pretend it’s not there at all and treat the SC as a 2 seater, nothing lost.

Truth. OEM equivalent should be fine.

There are many worse ways to spend money than on a SL73 with pano and two piece monoblocks.
For what I know about these cars, buy the nicest and maybe newest you can afford. Don’t risk it on a beater, unless you know it is mechanically lovely.

Dear lord. Is that CF engine trim original?
